Wishes for the Sky enters its fourth year, and we couldn't have made it this far without individual financial and volunteer support.  We have all helped create something quite remarkable: a one-of-a-kind, coming-of-spring, zero-waste, Earth Day public art tradition based on Asian customs of kite-flying and wishing.  What other event allows us to see and feel our collective hopeful hearts?  What other event prepares the heart for peaceful wishing and helps the wishes soar hundreds of feet into the air?  Thousands of wishes have flown over Harriet Island along the Mississippi.  It is a beautiful, artful expression of hope!

The 2010 Earth Day event is scheduled for Sunday, April 25, on Harriet Island in Saint Paul.  As always, the public art event is free.  Please put it on your calendars.

We need your help.  Wishes for the Sky has been supported from the beginning by fairly stable grants, sponsorships, and donations.  Unfortunately, this year, we were ineligible for a key grant and need to raise $10,000 to make up for it.  Your contribution will augment commitments already made by Public Art Saint Paul, Eureka Recycling, Saint Paul Parks and Recreation, Mississippi Market, Metropolitan Regional Arts Council, and others.  Without your generosity, our preparations will slow and may need to come to a halt.  Your gift this year is important, very important.

Wishes for the Sky can do some amazing things.  For example, these three years, 4,500 have attended the event yet we’ve created less than 24 pounds of trash, cumulatively.  That’s less than 1/10 of an ounce per person! Eureka Recycling tells us that’s unheard of.  We are the gold-star standard and can lead the way to help others.

Another thing that makes us unique is how we include everyone’s participation.  Everyone has a wish to make, and we’ve helped thousands make good wishes on Earth Day.

Now, we have a wish ourselves: please consider a financial contribution to Wishes for the Sky.  We are confident that with a little bit of help from our friends we will make our fundraising goal.  Then please come make a wish and fly a kite with us for Earth Day 2010!
