Willmar Music Matters raises funds to preserve the music programs in Willmar Public Schools.

Willmar Music Matters gave a $28,500 grant to the Willmar school district to reinstate 4th and 5th grade orchestra which had been cut from the budget for the 2010-2011 school year. Because of the community support, 69 4th graders started orchestra last fall! Another grant of $28,500 will fund the 4th and 5th grade orchestra for the 2011-2012 school year.

Willmar has a great performance music program with the high school hosting four (4) choirs, three (3) bands and two (2) orchestras. Over 400 students participate in music programs at the high school level.

The Middle and Elementary programs provide the critical foundation and stepping stones required for a successful program. In this time of state budget shortfalls, these programs are a risk.

Music provides a bonding experience for youth. School music also builds connections with the broader community. The Willmar High School Marching Band has earned awards around the state. The Willmar Pep Band has "blown the socks off" of spectators as regional and state athletic contests.

    I had a great time in the Willmar Band when going through Willmar High School, we want to keep the program going for others ! Member class of 1961.

    Great effort to save music in the schools when tax dollars won't go far enough. I learned music as a young person in the schools and went to teach it.
