On June 17, 2010 a devastating F4 tornado struck the community of Wadena. Please donate now to help residents with disaster relief efforts!

According to Wadena County sources, the tornado touched down at 5:10 p.m. and left a 10-mile path of destruction in both residential and commercial areas. (Wadena, population 4,300, is located about 45 miles west of Brainerd in central Minnesota.)

Thankfully (and amazingly), only minor injuries were reported. However, the Wadena-Deer Creek High School, Wadena Community Center, Minnesota State Community College, Wadena County Fairgrounds, the city cemetery and other areas all suffered severe damage. At least 230 homes were either damaged or destroyed.

The Initiative Foundation continues to work with Wadena and Otter Tail County leaders to develop a plan for distributing the funds via a volunteer advisory committee. We will use this site and e-mail to communicate all funding decisions as they are made.

Please know that every donated dollar is set to work as intended, but the needs are still great. 100% of all GiveMN donations will go directly to Wadena and Otter Tail County organizations to meet the needs of families, help mobilize volunteers, and advance the rebuilding efforts. THANK YOU for your continued generosity!

I grew up by Motley and have many fond memories associated with the nice town of Wadena ~ going to the old Drive Inn Theater and swimming in the pool while my Dad or Mom played ball ~ to name just a few. I just wanted to do my part in helping the people of Wadena restore their wonderful town and community.

Our Wadena "family" was so generous and supportive of us several years ago when our oldest son Ryan was critically ill, and this is a small way that we can repay that kindness, support and generosity. Wadena has been a wonderful place to raise our family, and I have complete faith that we will all come out of this stronger than ever!

For many years I worked with the great people at the technical college in Wadena, during the years when they were part of the multicampus Northwest Technical College. What a terrible thing to happen! We here at NTC in Bemidji wish you all the best as you work to recover from this devastation.

My Dad grew up in the Bluffton/Wadena area and even though we have no family left there, feel a special bond with the area. Our thoughts and prayers are with the people of Wadena/Bluffton.

I've spent some time in Wadena and was blown away by what I saw. The devastation is incredible, but the community leadership and strong spirit is what really touched me. Way to go Wadena---we are here for you!

Having been through a tornado myself I empathize with what the residents are dealing with in having to clean up and move forward. It takes a toll physically and emotional that takes a long time to overcome. I wish them all the best.

Thanks for creating a way to help the community of Wadena during this terrible crisis. I grew up in Wadena and remember the town's kindness and generosity. I was especially sad to see our old house at 704 Irving Ave SW get so damaged by the tornado. Best of luck to you all!

Wadena will need a lot of help to recover from the devastation, caused by the tornado. My hats off to all those helping with the clean-up, and those who are so giving of their time and supplies to help restore the town I called home for many years, and still consider "home"
