The Rolando Ochoa Fund for Latino Children with Cancer has a mission to help children with cancer in Ecuador.

Created in memory of her father, Maria Ochoa established the Rolando Ochoa Fund for Latino Children with Cancer to help provide better medical care for children with cancer in Ecuador. Maria's vision is to have each child with cancer in Ecuador receive treatment regardless of their families ability to pay.

All contributions go directly to El Instituto del Cancer SOLCA in Cuenca, Ecuador. Donations help in the following areas:

  • Provide opportunities to medical staff from SOLCA and Children’s of Minnesota get together and learn from each other’s knowledge and experience. This is done by sending medical mission groups to Ecuador as well as hosting medical staff at Children’s Minneapolis.
  • Provide children with cancer with medicines for pain and nausea not available in Ecuador (Emla cream, scopolamine patches, Benadryl, sea bands).
  • Buy toys, puzzles, coloring books, markers, crayons, stickers, and crafts for the patients at SOLCA.
  • Help families who have a child with cancer afford underwear and shoes for the child in treatment.
  • Cover costs of transportation (of children under chemotherapy treatment and one family member) from the Andean Mountains area and the jungle of Ecuador to Cuenca, city where SOLCA is located.
  • Provide families with children under chemotherapy treatment with a monthly basket of food (items include nuts, raisins, rice, oil, oatmeal among others).
  • Help families with children under chemotherapy treatment make their monthly payments to SOLCA ($20-$400 depending on the family income).
  • Help buy children under chemotherapy treatment medicines and supplements that SOLCA cannot provide (antibiotics, drugs for side effects, multivitamins).
  • Help families buy hemoglobin and platelets for children with Leukemia.
  • Provide families with basic items to help children with cancer be comfortable at home (mattresses, beds, pillows, floor fans, blankets, underwear, shoes).
  • Pay shipping costs of prosthesis made in the US.
