A project of Minnesota Historical Society
The Laura Zeccardi Memorial Fund will support Educational Outreach and Library programs at the Minnesota Historical Society in perpetuity.
Laura Zeccardi was passionate about history and education and used her passion to help thousands of students participating in the National History Day Program in Minnesota.
Laura grew up in Chatfield, Minnesota, and began participating in History Day as a 6th grader. She was one of the few students who participated in the program in every year she was eligible and went on to represent Minnesota at the national competition multiple times. As a student at Macalester College, Laura served as an intern for the History Day Program and eventually joined the Minnesota Historical Society staff after completing graduate school at NYU.
At the Society, Laura's work as an Outreach Specialist for the History Day program brought her tremendous joy, her father shared that she "was doing the work she was born to do." She excelled at providing classroom support to students and teachers and, most recently, was responsible for coordinating the expansion of student research support services at public and university libraries.
Sarah Becker, a student who travelled with Laura to the National History Day competition in Washington D.C. shared the following story about Laura's impact on her:
"Laura was BY FAR my favorite NHD staffer--I really loved her. I have really great memories of her--she was so helpful, passionate, and very, very nice to me. I am so thankful for the way that Laura really CARED. My second trip to NHD, I didn't make it to finals (I had the year before), and she took the initiative to notice I hadn't made it, find me right away, and talk to me--I'm really grateful for her. And I remember that she sat down with me and my judging sheets and we went over them... I can't say a whole lot other than again she cared. What I'll remember about her was her genuine interest in me as a person...she was a blessing to me! I am so glad that I got to know her through History Day."
Thanks to the generosity of Laura's family, friends, and colleagues, the Laura Zeccardi Memorial Endowment Fund will provide nearly $1,000 in annual support for history outreach programs including History Day in Minnesota.
