THE EMILY PROGRAM FOUNDATION
We are dedicated to eliminating eating disorders through advocacy and education.
Eating disorders kill. Eating disorders have the highest mortality rate of any mental illness. An estimated 11 million Americans have an eating disorder. The mortality rate associated with anorexia nervosa is 12 times higher than the death rate of ALL causes of death for females 15-24 years old. 20% of all people suffering from anorexia will prematurely die from complications related to their eating disorder, including suicide and heart problems. 50% of girls between the ages of 11 & 13 see themselves as overweight. 80% of 13 year-olds have attempted to lose weight The more we talk, the more people will hear about the life-threatening affects of eating disorders and the obstacles to recovery. More talk will lessen the shame and stigma associated with eating disorders. The Emily Program Foundation offers educational services and training to help with important conversations about weight, body image, and eating issues. We send speakers into schools to educate and raise awareness about eating disorders as well as educate professionals for understanding. The Foundation also offers support groups for friends and families of individuals struggling with eating disorders in addition to reaching out to those individuals receiving treatment or who are new to recovery.
