For some students in the Suburbs and neighborhoods of the Twin Cities, college tours, museum visits, and airplane travel are commonplace; this is not the case for most of our KIPPsters. The year-end trips provide an opportunity to explore their world in new ways. These trips are invaluable part of their learning and exposure, and provide many important firsts for them. These end of year trips truly change the lives of the students they reach by bringing classroom learning to life and marking important milestones in kids’ lives. Some have never seen a national monument in person, some have never ventured to see the shores of Lake Superior; others have never flown on an airplane or packed their own suitcase. Imagine Haellee (or your little) and the rest of the class of 2016 reciting the words to MLK’s “I Have a Dream” Speech on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial. These are the moments that many of our students realize they can be the change they wish to see in the world. Throughout their trips, the powerful educational lessons our KIPPsters learn will only be surpassed by what they learn about themselves.
