Provide support/advocacy/training for people of all ages with developmental disabilities as they live, work and play in their communities.
Arc Kandiyohi County has been a non-profit organization in this area for over 50 years. In the beginning, children and adults with disabilities were institutionalized. Over the years, the institutions have virtually disappeared and these children and adults have been included in the schools, workplace, churches, and recreation in our communities. This has been a positive movement for both children and adults with disabilities as well as those without.
Through our organization, we provide support for families and professionals through workshops and trainings. Trainings offered this past year have been in the areas of Fetal Alcohol Syndrome, Sensory Processing Disorders, and Guardianship/Conservatorship. We have had over 100 attendees in our trainings and helped 50 families with advocacy and support issues. People can call in with questions or issues they need help with, and we provide them with the resources to help them. We also provide recreational events for our consumers.
This past year, we have had over 1,000 attendees at our various events/activities. These activities take place throughout the community such as Robbin's Island, Willmar Junior High School, Let's Go Fishing, Willmar Community Center, The Big Kahuna, Prairie Woods Environmental Learning Center, Willmar Civic Center, Willmar Senior High, Saulsbury Beach and more. These programs are open to everyone in the county and beyond who has a developmental disability. Arc Kandiyohi County also supports the People First Group which is a group of adults with disabilities who meet monthly at Calvary Church. This group's purpose is to develop self-advocacy in members to increase their independence within the community. People First members feel it is critical to give back to the community and volunteer over 800 hours every year in the community. Arc also provides scholarships to our consumers with financial need so that they can afford to attend recreation events such as therapeutic horse riding lessons, Special Olympics, Camperships, etc.
Arc also awards a scholarship to a graduating senior who has a disability toward post-secondary education.
