Support Juneau the Peregrine Falcon at The Raptor Center
A fundraiser supporting UNIVERSITY OF MINNESOTA FOUNDATION
Juneau came to The Raptor Center in 1998. Her weight was about right for a peregrine falcon of her size, but she had obviously suffered trauma to her right shoulder. An X-ray revealed another sad fact: a pellet in the lower right breast area. Juneau had been shot. After six weeks of care by TRC staff, Juneau’s wound had healed completely. However, there was still a problem with the bird’s right shoulder. While she was capable of short flights, she could not lift her shoulder to get off the ground. An X-ray confirmed irreparable damage. The peregrine falcon would never fly again.
In the years since, Juneau has become a wonderful ambassador for her species, accompanying staff members to educational programs for all ages. Kate Hanson, TRC’s current education bird curator, says Juneau is one of TRC’s most reliable birds, so even-tempered that she is used to train new education volunteers in raptor handling and care. Juneau shows a keen interest in Chup, our male peregrine falcon, whenever he’s in view, Kate adds with a smile.
