Spout Press is committed to publishing and promoting the finest in contemporary experiemental writing -- mentoring young writers and bringing new and/or under appreciated voices to the attention of a larger audience.
Spout Press began in 1989 as Spout Magazine, now one of the most long running and stable independent journals in the Twin Cities. With the success of the journal, Spout Press was able to venture into book publishing in September 1997 with the debut release “A Definitive Guide to the Twin Cities.” By expanding into book publishing, Spout is able to combine the spirit of the journal with a commitment to publishing on a larger scale.
Spout features local and regional writers, with an emphasis on highlighting experimental and underappreciated writers of fiction, thought, and poetry. Spout Press has published the work of Charles Bukowski, Joanna Furhman, Dessa, Ed Bok Lee, Joanna Rawson, Stephen Burt, Richard Kostelanetz, John Bennett, Howard Zinn, Alison McGhee, Hardara Bar-Nadav, Jeffrey Little, Kirsten Dierking, and many others. In addition to publishing about two books a year and an issue of Spout magazine, the press sponsors the annual Story of the Year fiction contest, readings and other events.
Spout is committed to creating community through the arts, and the vision of independent publishing. Spout is a member of the Council of Literary Magazines and Presses (CLMP). Spout Press titles are distributed by Small Press Distribution (SPD).
