Supporting Smokey and River and helping to find them their forever home together!

On March 17th 2013, Ruff Start Rescue was contacted by someone who needed our help. We get a lot of emails on a daily basis from people who need help with animals but this one was different... A lot of times its frustrating to read the emails stating they had a baby and can no longer care for their animals, or they have decided to move and don't want to take their animals, or the animals were left behind, etc. This story touched all of us. The owner needed to surrender the 2 dogs due to unfortunate circumstances. Here is a little about the 2 senior boys:

Smokey's mother was picked up by animal control when she was pregnant, so he was born into the system. He came into my life when he was three months old. He turned blind about two years ago, but it hasn't stopped him from being a lovable guy. River was found floating down the Mississippi river, as a puppy. Hence, his name. They are both getting older, but are a great couple of dogs, and I so want to give them the opportunity to live out the rest of their days, together.

Our intake team instantly wanted to help, but we knew this would be a hard case and we would have to find just the right foster AND adopter for these 2 boys. This is such a sad story and we are hoping we can find a forever home for them, and it must be together. Smokey hears for River, and River sees for Smokey. There will be no separating them. On Saturday April 6th, we placed both dogs into one of our amazing foster homes.

They are doing great there but Smokey has always lived on a one level home and the foster has stairs and he is not fond of that. They also don't like other dogs coming around their food and would do better being adopted together as the only dogs (they don’t mind each other when it comes to eating by one another however). They are confused on where their owner went but are doing well together. They both have some sore joints and we are hoping to raise some $ for their care to get them some supplements and nice dog beds and senior dog food.

We want to give these guys (along with the rest of Ruff Start animals the best life possible). Because of their old age there are downfalls and our vet bills will probably be higher and the extra things add up (like the supplements and senior food etc). We are amazed at how many wonderful people stepped up to follow their story and offer to share and tried to help find them a foster. We thought we would have SUCH a hard time placing them into a foster but we did it! Now we need your help to find them the perfect adopter where they can live out their lives together until the end. They are so sweet with all people. We want to find them their forever home asap so that they don't have to fully adjust at the fosters home with the stairs etc and then relearn everything all over again. So the sooner the better! Please help us raise money for Smokey and River and support Ruff Start Rescue and please help share their story so we can find the perfect home for them!!! Thank you!!

Any additional funds raised will be used towards our vet bills for more animals that we save. Our vet bills are our biggest expense and in 2012 alone we spent $96,000 in veterinary expenses! So any little bit helps. Thanks you to those who contribute to Smokey and River and any others. If you would like to donate but don't want to donate online, you can also mail a check to:
