The intimate recital format of a Schubert Club performance creates a human bond between performer and audience that isn't possible in a large performance format. This connection touches the soul and draws one into a personal encounter uncommon in other performing arts genres. Come and experience The Schubert Club.
The Schubert Club Mission: To promote the art of music, particularly recital music, through performance, education and museum programs -- and to maintain a high standard of excellence.
For 128 years, The Schubert Club has brought virtually all of the world's great recitalists to the Saint Paul stage-Jascha Heifetz, Arthur Rubinstein, Cecelia Bartoli, Isaac Stern, Beverly Sills and Yo-Yo Ma, to name a few.
No longer an actual club, all of its offerings are open to the public, entertaining and educating 35,000 people in the Twin Cities every year. Over 380 artists are given the opportunity to perform annually, more than 6,000 youth are served through the Schubert Club educational and museum programs, and over 1,000 people each month visit the newly renovated museum. Low-ticket prices, subsidized education programs and free admission to the museum and Courtroom Concerts help make its programs accessible to the general public.
Our leading Concert Series is the International Artist Series. Nearly sold-out annually on subscription, the series is presented in the beautiful Ordway Center for the Performing Arts. It is the largest of our seven concert series, which also include the 32 weekly free Courtroom Concerts, the Hill House Series, the Early Music Series, the United Hospital Series and the Saint Paul Summer Song Festival. Many of these presentations are recorded for later radio broadcast by MPR and heard by thousands.
The impressive state-of-the-art Schubert Club Museum in the Landmark Center houses a collection of historic musical instruments and manuscripts from around the world by great composers, including Beethoven, Mozart and Bach. A "living museum" of replica period keyboards is available for artists to rehearse and record, keeping the instruments and music alive for this generation and the next. We are committed to keeping the admission to the Museum free to the public.
For 22 years, our primary education program, Project CHEER, provides free music lessons for over 200 students at the Martin Luther King Center. The Schubert Club annually awards over $70,000 in scholarships to young musicians, including $50,000 to winners of the prestigious annual Bruce P. Carlson Student Scholarship Competition. In addition, The Schubert Club annually offers free master classes with leading artists and student discounts at its concerts. Over 2,500 students a year utilize our collection of Indonesian gamelan instruments through school residencies.
The Schubert Club is committed to new, quality music and supports composers-in-residence; actively commissions' new works, publishes books and monographs, and produces recordings under its Ten Thousand Lakes label. Two of our commissioned compositions have been awarded Pulitzer Prizes. The Schubert Club is a proud member of the Arts Partnership with The Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra, Minnesota Opera and The Ordway Center for the Performing Arts.
This programming is only made possible by generous donors like you. Ticket admission supports only 20% of our budget, so your support is valuable!
