This fund will make zero-interest loans with generous repayment periods to Voyageur participants with financial need.
Sam Keaveny was a pilar in the Voyageur family. As a crew member, guide, friend and role model he touched many lives and affected the program forever. Unexpectedly in 2000, he passed away, just before leading a trip of young men to Hudson Bay.
This fund named in Sam's honor will allow participants to borrow interest free in order for them to pay their trip cost and participate in the expedition. Participants will sign an agreement to repay the loan back so it may continue to provide access to the Voyageur experience which Sam believed so deeply in.
This fund will empower self-determination for participants to pay for their own trips and hold them responsible to repay when they can. Most borrowers will make an affordable monthly payment over few years following their trip.
The memorial stone was brought to the confluence of the Hayes and Fox Rivers in Manitoba near the magical Hudson Bay by the crew Sam was to guide in 2000. Sam's own words inscribed on the memorial show his passion for the wilderness and it's power to transform youth. This a vision shared by Les Voyageurs and we hope this fund will help make the experience possible for many youth.
