Paul Scanlon is supporting the American Red Cross of SE MN in its 7th Annual Heroes Campaign
Thank you for visiting my fundraising page!
Donating through this website is simple, fast and totally secure. It is also the most efficient way to support my fundraising efforts.
The Southeast Minnesota Chapter of the American Red Cross is holding its seventh annual Heroes Campaign in support of its local operations. The Red Cross has been in the headlines repeatedly with disaster relief, locally with house fires and floods, and nationally and internationally with a wide variety of disasters, most recently, earthquake in Haiti, tsunami in Japan, and tornadoes in the SE USA.
Over the years, I have set personal challenges: Long river kayaking trips, long bike rides, including my trip with my daughter Kelsey and friends riding from Fairbanks to Coldfoot, Alaska, north of the Arctic Circle. Last year, Kelsey and I were co-chairs of the Heroes Campaign. In the process, I have raised over $47,000 for the SE MN Chapter of the Red Cross.
This year, I planned a one-day bike trip along the Mississippi from LaCrescent, MN though NE Iowa, SW Wisconsin, into NW Illinois, finishing in Dubuque, IA, 150 miles & 4 states in one day. I even bought a new bike for the trip, a Trek Madone.
Unfortunately, on February 26th, my plans changed. I was skiing in an XC Ski race and crashed on a very fast downhill. I broke my humerus and dislocated my shoulder. I am still recovering. I have just been out of the sling for a few weeks. I just completed my first rotation back in the ICU. At this point, my next athletic challenge is to get back full range of motion for my shoulder. I have ridden my cruiser bike a few tentative miles, looking forward to having the strength to get back on my road bike, perhaps by mid-summer.
The needs of disaster victims have not gone away, so I’m hoping you will spot me a year. My friends and supporters have been among the top contributors to the Heroes Campaign since 2005. Last year over 80 contributors gave nearly $100 each. I hope you will be generous again. Contributions are fully tax-deductible, and Red Cross provides a receipt. For those who demand to see me sweat, I hope to make the LaCrescent to Dubuque trip later in the summer. I can let you know if that works out.
Many thanks for your support -- and don't forget to forward this to anyone who you think might want to donate too!
