NORTH HOUSE FOLK SCHOOL

Direction – it is a powerful thing. Whether paddling across a northern lake or aspiring to undertake an important project, a sense of direction serves as a way-finder, a guide, a focusing agent. As the old saying goes “If you don’t know where you’re going, you’ll probably never get there.” We all need it - direction.

The image above speaks directly to this fact. Setting one of the four cardinal points, Grand Marais craftsman John Skadberg works on the new compass rose that sits in the middle of the emerging Outdoor Student Commons. Awaiting its moment and as the picture makes clear, North House’s logo (handcrafted by another local craftsman, Donn Eliasen) is also part of the rose. Awaiting nearby, though not pictured - a large letter, N. The symbolism is intentional. The North, our mission, our direction is at the center of North House.

Direction - Thanks to board members, lead donors and area businesses, North House had a $37,500 match on the table for our 2011 year-end campaign. New and expanded membership gifts and all donations to help North House build the Student Commons project qualified--and with tremendous donor support we met the challenge by year's end!
