Northeast Minnesota AHEC promotes
rural health educational opportunities
and addresses health workforce challenges unique to the ten-county Northeast region.
Health Career Puppets: Aimed at K-2nd grade students. The Health Career Puppets go on a “Great Hospital Adventure” meeting different people in various health care careers. The program also highlights 911.
Health Career Enrichment Program- HCEP: These educational kits are for 1st-6th grade classrooms. Each kit contains different hands-on activities, worksheets, books and videos that focus on healthy habits and health careers.
Health Occupations Today- HOT Program: This 3-day exciting, fast-paced program is for 8th-12th grade students who have an interest in a health care career. Students engage in hands-on activities, presentations, tours and academic planning. Northeast Minnesota AHEC works in collaboration with health care facilities, academic institutions, and rural communities throughout the region.
Health Occupation Students of America- HOSA: H.O.S.A. is a national student organization whose mission is to promote career opportunities in health care and to enhance the delivery of quality health care to all people. Northeast Minnesota AHEC is on the HOSA State Board, is involved in student competitions and supports chapters in our region.
Health Professions Students and Residents
The Summer Internship in Medicine (S.I.M.) and Winter Internship in Pharmacy (W.I.P.) are rural immersion experience occurring during the summer and winter months. S.I.M. and W.I.P. encourage health professions’ student involvement in community, health systems, clinical medicine, pharmacy, and interprofessional experiences in rural and underserved areas. Moreover, the programs provide students with an experiential reference as they continue their training and the opportunity to experience rural communities as a professional.
Disciplinary Clinical Rotations of between two weeks and nine months for students in medicine, nursing, pharmacy, dentistry, and public health.
Palliative Care Initiative (Pall CI) that strengthens palliative care services in rural areas while developing a network approach to recruitment and retention of health professionals.
Northeast Minnesota AHEC is one of Minnesota's most recent Regional Geriatric Education Centers (RGECS) and provides interprofessional education and innovative program on geriatrics and gerontology.
Northeast Minnesota AHEC's mnHEALTHnet serves as a collaborative interprofessional network of health care, community, and academic partners committed to supporting community organizations in developing chronic care management/education and training resources to improve health in rural and underserved communities.
