MAM's mission is to enrich the lives of people in Minnetonka, Minnesota and surrounding communities through musical opportunities.
Founded in 1974 by Dr. Roger Satrang Hoel, the Music Association of Minnetonka (MAM) is a proud participant in the community life of Minnetonka with three instrumental ensembles and seven choirs. These musical ensembles are made up of over 275 musicians representing all facets of our community. There are virtuosos and just plain music lovers; there are senior citizens and school children. Adults and youth from all over the Minneapolis/St. Paul area participate in our ensembles. In all, 37 Twin Cities communites are represented in the various performing ensembles. MAM is thought to be one of the largest community music programs in the United States.
Many years ago, Roger Hoel asked one of his beloved teachers, Olaf Christiansen, then director of the St. Olaf Choir, what happened when all the talented musicians moved on from college to jobs often not related to music. Dr. Christiansen's response was to challenge Roger to start choirs and orchestras wherever he was and to encourage participation among communites. Roger took the challenge very seriously. When he and his family settled in Minnetonka, he approached the City of Minnetonka and was granted a small amount of money for music to start the Minnetonka Symphony Orchestra. As they say, the rest is history.
Any donation, large or small, helps us present 50 free concerts a year.
"After working more than 36 years in community programs, I have seen many instances where music has literally restored joy and meaning to people's lives. Also, we've learned that life-long enjoyment of music is made more meaningful when it is shared with others through singing and playing together. Your kind donation will allow us to serve our communities more fully and to provide creative and educational experiences for a wide range of performers and listeners." ~ Roger Hoel
