Josh Wood tells in the video above how with the help of TORCH – a college-aspirations program supported by AmeriCorps Promise Fellows provided through the Minnesota Alliance With Youth – he was transformed from a would-be dropout into a motivated student who had found the support he needed to imagine a successful future for himself.

Josh graduated from high school having already earned 24 college credits and is now attending Hamline University. He gives much of the credit to TORCH and the Promise Fellows who changed his trajectory.

“The program really helped me connect with people and helped me see that I’m part of a larger community,” Josh said. “Without the relationships and that personal one-on-one support, I don’t think I would be graduating from high school, and I know I wouldn’t have 24 college credits.”

The Minnesota Alliance With Youth is the leading convener, collaborator and capacity-builder for youth development in Minnesota. We work with and for youth to ensure that all young people have access to five fundamental resources proven to ensure that youth succeed, which are known as the “Five Promises” – caring adults, safe places, a healthy start, effective education and opportunities to help others.

The Alliance is the Minnesota affiliate of the America’s Promise Alliance and is the statewide host-coordinator of the AmeriCorps Promise Fellows and the Minnesota Youth Council.

Since 2004, Promise Fellows have supported mentoring, tutoring and service learning programs in both in-school and out-of-school settings which have led to improved academic performance for the majority of participants.

Communities that host a Promise Fellow find that an incredible two-thirds of the students served experience significant academic gains and attain personal success when they are connected with caring adults in their communities and are engaged in leadership and service to others.

Promise Fellows have served 160,000+ youth in 75 schools and communities across Minnesota to increase youth engagement, develop strong youth voices, and help them acquire the skills needed to be successful in school, work and life.
