The Minnesota Literacy Council's mission is to share the power of learning through education, community building and advocacy.

MLC provides direct and indirect literacy services to adults, children, families and community programs around Minnesota:

• Adults in the Twin Cities attend classes at five MLC Learning Centers in Minneapolis and St. Paul to build English and work-readiness skills and prepare for the GED test. The Adult Literacy Hotline refers thousands of Minnesotans to nearly 400 literacy programs across the state.

• Children and families gain the tools they need to develop successful young learners. The Early Literacy and Families program inspires parents to be their children’s first and most important teacher. National Service members help children improve their reading fluency through the Summer Reads VISTA program.

• Literacy programs in Minnesota are strengthened through MLC’s training and advisory support for Adult Basic Education, educational technology and volunteer management. MLC trains and places nearly 2,000 volunteer tutors each year. Across the state, 40 National Service members provide capacity-building support to literacy programs through the VISTA (Volunteers in Service to America) program.

I believe literacy allows people to reach their full potential. Improving literacy is the mission of the MLC, and so I believe in financially supporting it in this important endeavor.

Since a number of my family members are fluent in a variety of foreign languages and have traveled the world I can see conversely how important it is for people living in the US to be able to communicate and learn.

Thank you! I am a volunteer tutor and I am now pursuing my degree in teaching! I really do appreciate your programs as I do see the lack of tutors for the amount of students that are in dire need of basic education in order to make it in the real world. I see the world in a whole new light now!

Through the efforts of the caring, committed MLC staff and volunteers, all learners are welcomed and supported as they increase their academic competencies. The power of this support goes beyond the tangible gains in literacy, however. Through the experience of engagement in the learning community, hope and empowerment become visible, as strangers become friends in supporting and celebrating one another's successes.
