Minnesota Budget Project
A project of MINNESOTA COUNCIL OF NONPROFITS INC
The Minnesota Budget Project is an active and influential voice for a fair tax system and sound budget principles. We engage in analysis, advocacy and outreach to influence tax and budget decisions on behalf of low- and moderate-income Minnesotans.
Today, the State of Minnesota faces severe budget challenges that make it difficult to make the public investments that contribute to a society in which everyone has the opportunity to succeed. Over the last decade, our state’s tax system has become a smaller share of the economy and has become less fair, so that low- and moderate-income Minnesotans pay a larger share of their incomes in taxes than the wealthiest Minnesotans.
At the federal level, important choices will be made in 2010 about whether to extend a package of tax cuts that have contributed to unsustainable deficits and made the tax system less fair. Will these tax cuts continue, or will we choose a more sustainable path that allows us to fund our national priorities?
The Minnesota Budget Project will fight hard and smart on both the state and federal levels for raising revenues fairly, protecting low- and moderate income households, and rebuilding our public institutions. We must change course so that Minnesota can maintain our high quality of life and build a strong economic future.
