Support Milkweed Editions, where transformative literature takes flight.

At Milkweed Editions, we identify, nurture, and publish transformative literature, and build an engaged community around it.

Founded in 1980, Milkweed Editions has grown into one of the nation’s foremost independent book publishers and an essential force in Minnesota’s arts ecology. Operating as a nonprofit organization allows us to focus on books that matter. We seek out works of artistic excellence and encourage developing writers; our passion for good books and their transformative potential informs our every move.

Our work is made possible in part by book sales revenue and in part by the generous support of our community. Each year we publish fifteen to twenty books in the genres of fiction, nonfiction, and poetry. We are truly a product of our environment, and are proud to call Minnesota home. Local support has brought us national success: our titles have garnered two Lannan Literary Awards, four Whiting Awards, the Los Angeles Times Book Prize for Poetry, two American Book Awards, seven New York Times Book Review Notable Books of the Year, and thirteen Minnesota Book Awards.

We believe in the power of books, and want to share them with readers, new and old. We collaborate with Twin Cities-area schools and local arts organizations to provide programming that awakens a love of reading in young students. We donate books to hospitals, veterans’ organizations, and other community partners.

When you support Milkweed Editions, your commitment puts words on the page—it keeps the presses running and the e-books downloading; it allows us to support outstanding writers and encourage emerging voices; it helps us to share beautiful words and new ideas with readers all over the country and world.

In the rapidly evolving field of publishing, the call of the bottom line can drown out new voices and quiet masterpieces. As an independent literary press, we are committed to getting those voices heard and read. We are committed to the future of good books, and we thank you for your support of Milkweed Editions.

I wasn't an English major, and they still let me intern! ;-) Now, I'm doing academic technology, and discovering how profoundly my time at Milkweed has shaped my approach to books--in print form, e-form, and everything in between!
