Mission:

The mission of Midwest Health Center for Women is to provide quality health care while advocating and promoting reproductive freedom and healthy sexuality.

Midwest Health Center for Women (MHCW) is still the only nonprofit clinic in Hennepin County providing the full range of reproductive health care services, including medical and surgical abortions, and is one of only fourteen independent non-profit feminist abortion providers remaining in the nation.

During Midwest Health Center for Women’s fiscal year 2008/2009 over 7,000 people were served through direct health care services, outreach and education, speaking engagements, and referrals.

Midwest Health Center for Women continually looks at the needs of women and girls in our community and strives to incorporate new services when and where they would benefit our community. During the past two years, two new initiatives have been incorporated into MHCW’s other programming and services:

 S.H.E. Clinic (Sexual Health Empowerment) is MHCW’s newest initiative. The Sexual Health Empowerment Clinic provides sexual health care
services for women who have sex with women and all others who are queer-identified and female-bodied, regardless of gender identity.

 A.P.P.P. (Adolescent Pregnancy Prevention Project). MHCW has continued its successful second pregnancy prevention project for teens who have had an abortion at MHCW. APPP builds close, ongoing relationships with young women seen at the clinic to provide individualized guidance and education on contraception and pregnancy prevention.

In addition to the above, MHCW remains committed to providing:

 Health care services including annual gynecological examinations, access to emergency contraception, testing and treatment for sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and pregnancy termination through surgical and medical (RU486) abortions.

 Public Policy and Advocacy supported through a new collaboration with NARAL Pro-Choice Minnesota and the Women’s Health Center of Duluth. Through this effort, we remain committed to advocating for reproductive rights and healthy sexuality. MHCW, along with our collaborative partners, believes that the decision to have an abortion should remain between a woman and her loved ones, her doctor, or her spiritual confidant. We also believe government has no business weighing in on this private and personal matter.

 Community Outreach and Education Programs provide comprehensive sexuality education in small group settings with an emphasis on adolescents and young adults at high risk for unplanned pregnancy or sexually transmitted infections. MHCW promotes positive, healthy sexuality, with the goal of reducing unplanned pregnancies. We also maintain a visible presence in the community by distributing information at cultural and community events.
