Midwest Health Center for Women—celebrating 36 years of serving women and girls!
“I will never be able to say thank you enough to express how grateful I am. You are amazing! Without all of your patience, guidance, and truckloads of comfort, I wouldn’t have done so well.” ~ From a recent thank you card received from one of our patients
Founded only two years after abortion was legalized nationwide, Midwest Health Center for Women opened our doors in 1975 with five courageous employees and a steadfast commitment to safe, compassionate, and affordable abortion and family planning services.
The only non-profit clinic in Hennepin County offering the full range of women’s reproductive health care, including surgical and medical abortions, today we have expanded to over 30 full and part-time staff who oversee a range of programs to meet the needs of a diverse community.
We are dedicated to the belief that reproductive choices for women are vital for the health and well-being of the individual and community as a whole. Each year, we provide abortion, gynecological and birth control services for thousands of women at our clinic, with an emphasis on reaching those most in need of our services—those with the fewest resources.
We are committed to providing affordable care for the growing population of uninsured women, including those who do not qualify for Medicaid, those who are underinsured, and those who do receive medical insurance through an employer, but have out-of-range high deductibles.
As a founding member of the Feminist Abortion Network, we are one of just 14 remaining non-profit, independent feminist women's health centers in the country providing abortion care. We are committed to serving our patients and helping to cultivate the next generation of abortion providers.
In addition to routine gynecological care, abortion care, and confidential testing for sexually transmitted infections, we offer a range of programs designed to reach girls and women in our community. Here are just a few of them:
Unintended pregnancy options counseling sessions: Women unsure how to resolve an unplanned pregnancy can make an appointment with us to examine parenthood, adoption, and abortion in a non-judgmental setting with an experienced counselor. We offer several resources and support each person in making the decision that is right for her.
Adolescent Pregnancy Prevention Program: We designed this program to help prevent additional unplanned pregnancies in a high-risk population—young women under the age of 19 who have had an abortion at Midwest. We provide these patients with free health and counseling services, free contraception, a transportation stipend, and incentives to prevent an additional unintended pregnancy. We are proud to report a high level of success!
Safer Sex Initiative, a component of Hennepin County's "It's Your Future" Project: Over an extended period, we meet one-on-one with sexually active youth to discuss practicing safer sex and developing healthy relationships—including learning techniques for saying "no". This pilot program is aimed at creating positive behavior shifts and protecting youth from harmful outcomes such as sexually transmitted infections and unintended pregnancy.
S.H.E. Clinic: Formed to address the specific health needs of women who have sex with women, our Sexual Health Empowerment Clinic provides sexual health care that is welcoming, affordable, and inclusive for lesbian, bisexual, queer, and female-bodied transgender people, regardless of gender identity.
Thank you so much for your support—your gift makes a real difference in the lives of the women and girls in our community!
