A project of Mid Minnesota Legal Aid
Make a gift to change a life.
Legal Aid makes a difference in the community because we change lives — helping people find their path out of poverty, helping people get the access to justice that we all want, and ensuring people have an opportunity to live independently and have an opportunity to contribute to making our society of better place to live.
At Mid-Minnesota Legal Aid, we specialize in providing professional legal help to Minnesotans who traditionally lack access to the American justice system and cannot afford an attorney.
Margaret was renting a small home. She was looking for a new place to live, but health problems related to asthma were making that hard to do. The furnace did not work and the landlord was refusing to fix it, saying that space heaters were adequate. The problem controlling the heat was making Margaret’s breathing problems worse. Once she came to Legal Aid, a lawyer heard her story and got to work preparing an Emergency Tenant Remedies Action. At the Court hearing, the judge heard her story and ordered the landlord to repair the furnace. The judge also reduced the rent that Margaret had to pay. Margaret is still looking for an apartment that better meets her needs, but in the meantime she has a warm home that supports her fragile health.
Mid-Minnesota Legal Aid's Willmar Office advocates for the rights of disadvantaged people in Big Stone, Chippewa, Kandiyohi, La qui Parle, Lincoln, Lyon, Meeker, Renville, Swift, and Yellow Medicine counties.
