Multicultural community-based organization empowering people of many races, cultures, and ethnic backgrounds to live and work in peace.

Many of the people currently being served at MORE have lived in refugee camps for all or most of their lives and have no comprehension of many of the daily activities that happen in the lives of American families. These new Americans deal with many stressors and barriers in adjusting to their new culture. MORE works to address language and cultural barriers and provide assistance to help people navigate the various systems affecting their lives.

At present, MORE has two major programming areasfrom which we serve immigrants and refugees: Adult Basic Education (ELL) for new Americans and Social Services including Case Management/Advocacy, Basic Needs, and Mental Health Services.

ELL classes offer students assistance with reading, writing, listening and speaking skills as well as cultural adjustment instruction in areas such as finances, employment skills, nutrition, health, social customs, etc. Field trips to the grocery store, bank, and other retailers help students learn new vocabulary as well as give participants the opportunity to maneuver these new and unfamiliar American practices.

Social Services programming includes advocacy to assist participants in managing the very complicated systems of Human Services, employment, education, etc. Basic Needs programming includes weekly food and clothing/household goods distributions. Over the past two years the number of people seeking mental health help has increased significantly. Refugees arrive at MORE from war torn nations speaking very little English, tired and afraid. Many have experienced some form of mental or physical torture at the hands of their persecutors. A safe and natural environment in which participants can heal has been created at MORE.

Providing a safe place to learn is a great thing! Today, the reaction of one of my students who "got it" was worth all the effort by this teacher! Mary Sue Berg

I attended the open house at MORE in September and could not believe the overwhelming feeling of warmth, comfort and joy inside. May God bless the staff at MORE - for providing their much needed services - the world is a better place because of you. And to the refugees for their courage and strength. You've found hope at MORE.

It's an honor to have the chance to teach English to these trusting, open hearted, courageous people, many coming from years in a refugee camp after being chased from their villages day and night by soldiers ceaselessly hunting them. Newly arrived in this strange new land of America without the ability to understand English, they sorely need to be able to read signs that warn of danger and where to park in a snow emergency, fill out the myriad forms our country seems to require before assisting them, the ability to talk to their child's teacher, get a job, communicate with landlords and neighbors, and all the other daily ways we use English without a second thought. It is truly a deep, deep honor and pleasure to have the chance to teach these dear, brave survivors who come to add their beauty and story to our community.

The incredible adjustment demanded of refugees and immigrants after years of suffering, disloging, language learning are experiences few Americans know. MORE provides a place of healing, safety and community while giving Americans a chance to break down barriers and grow in appreciation of cultures, human strength while opening up to true friendship. MORE provides this coming together as one. THank you all who have and do work with MORE over these years. Grateful love and admiration, Sandy
