Martin Luther King Jr. Day Event--Kids Against Hunger Service Day

This fall, Apollo High School sophomore Kelsey Krueger presented KAH with the idea to hold her sweet 16 birthday party at Kids Against Hunger. She hoped that instead of having her friends come over to her house with presents, that she would ask them friends to honor birthday by donating money to pay for the meals they would package to fight global hunger. As ideas and opportunities began to arise around the event, Kelsey decided that she wanted to expand the scope of her vision to include not just her friends, but the St. Cloud area community. As plans for a community-wide event progressed further, it seemed that the ideas aligned perfectly with the message of Martin Luther King Jr. Day and National Day of Service, and thus we have planned KIDS AGAINST HUNGER SERVICE DAY for Saturday, January 16th, 2010 to commemorate Dr. King and offer an opportunity for the Central Minnesota community to join together in service and in the fight to end hunger both globally and locally. Our goal for the event is to package 133,000 meals with the help of 600 community volunteers at Atonement Lutheran Church! In order to do this, we need YOUR help. Packaging nearly 135,000 meals means that we need to raise $20,000 to pay for the raw food ingredients--and we can't do it without community effort! At $0.20 per meal, each dollar goes a long way--and in many of the communities we serve around the world, a single nutritious meal can save a child's life. Please join the community in living up to the dreams of Dr. King by standing up against hunger and poverty!
