A project of LIFE HOUSE INCORPORATED
The Life House “Adopt-A-Kid” Program educates the community about the issues facing homeless kids while providing an opportunity for hope.
In November 2013, Life House is featuring the story of Jimmy (updated from May 2011):
“Without Life House I would still be homeless. I needed support to help me make it through my new sobriety….”
Since a child, Jimmy has battled to maintain his sobriety. As a teen, “couch hopping” for shelter, Jimmy faced a hard decision – get sober or stay homeless.
That’s when Jimmy found Life House.
With support from Life House staff, Jimmy found safe housing and counseling to help with his sobriety. Jimmy also found help with tutoring, and began work as a Life House intern performing general maintenance duties in our Youth Center.
“Overcoming my anxiety was one of my biggest successes. Before I couldn’t even leave my apartment it was so bad. Because of Life House I was able to start confronting and working through my anxiety.”
Today, Jimmy has worked in Life House programs for over two years. He has remained sober, completed high school, and is a reliable member of the Life House maintenance team. This month, Jimmy will move into his own one-bedroom apartment.
“Because of Life House, I was able to overcome many of the issues that made me homeless. I am a different person now than who I was two years ago.”
At Life House, around 35-50 teens each day like Jimmy walk through our doors. Some have suffered through histories of abuse, neglect, or abandonment.
What makes them all the same is they need a helping hand - a door of opportunity to a world where they can be safe, healthy, and have a real future. Simply put…
Homeless doesn’t have to mean Hopeless.
Just $29 / month will Open a Door of opportunity for homeless kids to a world where they can be safe, healthy, and able to grow.
