Kinship of Greater Minneapolis, Inc.
A community-based mentoring program that helps children, age 5 to 15, who are in need of additional support realize their full potential.
Help us take advantage of a challenge grant from the Carlson Family Foundation matching all new and increased gifts up to $25,000, through December 31!
Every year, Kinship nurtures more than 75 new mentoring relationships — like the one between Moises and Isaac. Moises meets weekly with 9-year-old Isaac, helping him with his English and encouraging him to do well in school. We also sustain relationships like the seven-year friendship of 12-year-old Jada and her mentor, Colleen. Jada’s mother raises her five children alone, so having an additional, caring adult in her child’s life makes a world of difference.
Kinship serves about 250 to 350 children each year, with many more on the waiting list. Our matches are made following informational interviews with mentors, children and parents where we determine the best match. Our staff members offer ongoing support and guidance, and our matches last an average of three years, more than three times longer than most mentoring programs. Once a relationship is established, youth can stay in the program until age 18.
In 22 years, Kinship has inspired more than 1,700 mentoring relationships. We do not charge fees and are funded exclusively by gifts from individuals and foundations.
By creating positive relationships with caring adults, Kinship of Greater Minneapolis offers boys and girls who face significant barriers in life new opportunities to succeed.
