Learn about the need for children's hospice/respite care, realize there is not currently a place for these families, and make a gift today.

Children with a shortened life-expectancy – those who are not going to recover from an illness or congenital disease – have special needs. They need to be kids as well as patients. They need doctors, nurses and therapists who can treat them round-the-clock with play, music, and art as well as medicine. Their families need support and respite too. They need a place where they can get help coping with the life-changing situation they were thrown into.

An estimated 7-9,000 families in Minnesota alone are caring for children with shortened life expectancies, who require around-the-clock care. Once built, Children’s Lighthouse of Minnesota will provide short respite breaks for children and families. The home will also be an option beyond the hospital or home environment for compassionate hospice care at the end of a child’s life.

Harmon experienced the value of hospice care himself. After that, he became a highly vocal/visible advocate for hospice. Harmon saw the need for a special hospice and respite home for children. He and Nita were involved in early efforts to create a children’s hospice. He frequently made hospice and hospital visits. After two near-death experiences, Harmon reflected that he was supposed to do “something greater than baseball.” He found his calling in advocating for hospice care.

Donate to Harmon’s fund to build the first children’s hospice and respite home in the Midwest -- the first $25,000 in donations will be matched!

Visit www.ChildrensLighthouseMn.org to learn more about the the mission behind Harmon's fund and http://www.childrenslighthousemn.org/Killebrew to learn more about the fund itself. Help build awareness for this mission by sharing with others the importance of this home and the value of hospice care for children and people at any age. Together, we can raise the funds necessary to build Children's Lighthouse of Minnesota, the first dedicated children's hospice and respite care home in the Midwest, to be located in the Twin Cities.

Thank you to our generous donors that supported our matching donation challenge: Hackenmueller's Meat Market of Robbinsdale, The Libby Schomas Fund of the Luzerne Foundation, Dedicated Logistics, Inc. and a supporter who would like to remain anonymous.
