Help ILSR continue more than 35 years of work building economically strong, sustainable and vibrant communities!
For 35 years, the Institute for Local Self-Reliance has tackled global problems from the ground up by helping hundreds of communities get the most from their local resources. In the process our unusual combination of hands-on experience and policy expertise has gained wide recognition. “Whether it’s cell phone towers or retail outlets”, the Boston Globe wrote, “the issue for many communities is asserting their power to decide their own futures...The Institute for Local Self-Reliance can help. Check out www.NewRules.org."
Local self-reliance doesn’t mean self-sufficiency but rather self-consciousness and a willingness to use local and state authority to build strong, sustainable local economies. ILSR fights to protect and nurture strong, sustainable communities. That may involve fighting big box retail chains while starting independent business alliances. Or fighting high-voltage transmission lines while starting community based energy enterprises. Or fighting garbage incinerators while helping communities create jobs by maximizing re-use, recycling, composting and scrap-based manufacturing. Or fighting telecommunications monopolies while working to establish publicly owned information networks.
Now more than ever we need people to become involved in creating a sustainable future. Please support our work. For more about ILSR see our brief history and accomplishments: http://ilsr.org/accomplishments.html
Thank you for considering a contribution, it will help us greatly to ensure that sustainable community development takes place far and wide!

ILSR has long been a key resource in the professional work I do, but over the last two years, it has also been a critical resource in my personal advocacy, a local grassroots-based campaign to stop a big-box-anchored mall in my rural community, and turn our town toward more sustainable scales and forms of economic development. Stacey Mitchell has been readily available throughout our work, and directly and through her research and writing, has mentored us through a campaign that morphed from grassroots advocacy on planning and development issues to a successful run for local political office that will now provide the critically-needed swing vote for a size cap and begin a planning process that endorses mixed use and walkability. I only wish I could give more.
