A project of MINNESOTA IMMIGRANT FREEDOM NETWORK
Passover and Easter point us to life beyond ourselves and speak of sacrifice and deliverance. Please help us in the sacred tasks of justice,
by Marque Jensen, Executive Director.
As we move past Holy Week, or la Semana Santa, I want to talk with you about making your own Sacrificial Gift.
But first let me tell you what happened last week. A great victory in redistricting was won for Latinos in Minneapolis. Minnesota Immigrant Freedom Network helped organize and lead Latino parents and families to petition the Charter Commission to create a “Latino Opportunity Zone” in south Minneapolis. The first ward maps would have diluted the Latino Voice; the final map clearly recognizes the social and economic contributions of our community.
We are energized by this victory; the parents leading the charge are part of a group that meets weekly “Padres Adalante” (Forward Parents) is one of our key programs in which parents are empowered through gaining awareness of both their own power and how to engage the structures of education and government of our community. This is empowerment; and such power creates faith in a secure future and networks that are key to healthy communities and families.
Yet yet the task before us, to help secure justice and equality for our immigrant neighbors, is dauting. Even as we watch these families unleash their power, the power of anti-immigration sentiment grows stronger. Families continue to fear seperation and deportation. Students continue to lack access to educaitonal options because of situations they had no power to control.
We are moving forward with more programs in more communities. The May Day March and other educational campaigns will raise awareness. Neighborhood Encuentros will build relationships. Padres Adelantes will strengthen immigrants to organize and act for their own communities.
Will you give a gift today to help us to complete the task we have of… “Educating, Empowering, and Organizing Immigrants and their Allies to create strong and healthy communities for ALL Minnesotans.”
Can I count on you to make a Holy Week Gift? A sacrificial gift? A gift in honor of Immigrants.
