The Center is poised to establish the U of M as the hub of Tibetan healing in America. The time is now!

Ethics, spirituality and healing: Western culture (and healthcare) often views these as separate entities. In Tibetan healing, these realms are inextricably linked.

The Tibetan Healing Initiative (THI) expands the work of the Center for Spirituality & Healing focusing on Tibetan medicine and yoga in four areas: research, education, community engagement and integrated care. Tibetan medicine teaches us how to create and maintain a healthy mind and body in order to live a yogic life. Yoga is a way of living in a fully awake state. Via the Center, THI is poised to become the hub of Tibetan healing in the United States.

Dr. Miriam Cameron is THI’s faculty leader. For Dr. Cameron, THI is her most purposeful work to advance this ancient yet relevant wisdom. At the Center, she teaches graduate courses on Tibetan Medicine, Yoga, Ethics and Healing. For the past six years, Mim has brought students on pilgrimage journeys to India. These experiences and the bonds she has formed with leaders of Tibetan healing have laid the foundation for all that THI has accomplished in just one year.

THI in its First Year

In its first year, the Tibetan Healing Initiative accomplishments included:

  • The Second International Tibetan Medicine Conference was hosted in concert with the Tibetan American Foundation of Minnesota and Men-Tsee-Khang, as part of the celebratory visit by His Holiness the Dalai Lama to the University of Minnesota
  • Successful courses were taught by faculty leader Miriam Cameron, PhD
  • Research was conducted on the use of two pioneering tools –Constitutional Self Assessment and Lifestyle Guidelines –that explore the intersection between integrative health and Tibetan Medicine
  • Tibetan Medicine Practitioner Tenzin Namdul provided integrated care consultations for research study participants

How You Can Help

To advance its aspirations, the Tibetan Healing Initiative needs your support:

  • Resources for research — to generate solid empirical evidence regarding benefits of blending Tibetan healing with conventional approaches.
  • Resources for education –to expand the number and range of courses offered in Tibetan healing.
  • Resources for outreach — to create learning experiences and materials that enhance people’s understanding and applications of Tibetan medicine.
  • Resources for integrated care — to meet needs of people who seek guidance from practitioners of Tibetan healing as part of their personal care practices.

Home Base and Partners

The Tibetan Healing Initiative is advanced through its home base and partnerships:

  • The Center for Spirituality & Healing has a 16-year track record of orchestrating research, education, outreach, and integrated care involving Tibetan healing.
  • The University of Minnesota is the only major research university in the U.S. that offers graduate studies in Tibetan healing and medicine.
  • THI has several unique partnerships such as the Men-Tsee-Khang in Dharmasala as well as several Ayurveda and Yoga centers located in both the U.S. and India.

The Time is Now!

Because our conventional health systems—strong in so many ways--are encumbered in their care for individuals with chronic health conditions, the work of THI is timely. Tibetan healing offers promising model for health promotion and treatment of dis-ease by teaching individuals to make healthy lifestyle choices. THI has the potential to transform our healthcare system by focusing on optimal health and wellbeing.

“Tibetan wisdom teaches that we must behave ethically in order to grow spiritually and develop optimal health of mind and body. From Tibetan healing, we learn how to transform the ‘mud’ in life into ethical, spiritual ‘nutrition’ so that like a lotus flower, we rise up and bloom.” Miriam Cameron
