Accelerating Reading Success

Ever try to win a race when you’re in the middle of the pack? Metaphorically, that’s what some of our youngest Minnesotans face every day when they come to school and are struggling to read.

But the Minnesota Reading Corps is making a difference, helping those students who start out behind their classmates and need extra help to reach the finish line. Last year, 70 percent of the Reading Corps participants showed more than a year’s worth of growth and 50 percent raced ahead to meet or exceed their grade-level targets. In fact, children who participate in the Minnesota Reading Corps are passing the third-grade assessment tests at rates close to those of all Minnesota children. With the Minnesota Reading Corps, these children are on par with their peers, not falling farther behind.

More children need our help. Our goal is to expand this program, so that every child who needs a little extra assistance gets it – that’s a better finish for all Minnesotans.
