A project of CHESTERTON ACADEMY
Chesterton Academy offers an integrated, rigorous, classical high school education taught through the lens of the Catholic Faith.
Welcome to Chesterton Academy
The result of a grass-roots movement of parents, Chesterton Academy offers an integrated college preparatory curriculum taught through the lens of the Catholic faith. Launched in fall of 2008 with just 10 students, the school now enrolls more than 80 students in grades 9 through 12 and offers summer school programs, options for home school students, and adult enrichment classes.
Named for the great English writer G.K. Chesterton, Chesterton Academy raises up virtuous young men and women in the Catholic tradition of faith and reason, centered on the truth of the Incarnation of our Lord Jesus Christ. Inspired by Bl. Pope John Paul II, we take as our motto “Cultura Vitae”, “the culture of life.” We make it our mission to prepare our students to triumph over the materialism and despair that pervade our culture and to accept our Lord’s offer to have life and have it abundantly.
Our classical curriculum prepares our students to lead and to succeed. We prepare men and women for professional success not only because we wish them well in life but because we want them positioned to transform the culture, to lead the nation, and to make all things new in Christ.
Every day at Chesterton Academy starts with 8:00 a.m. Mass at Holy Family parish in St. Louis Park. At the start of every school year, the faculty swears an Oath of Fidelity to the Magisterium.
Students at Chesterton Academy enjoy a cohesive, content-rich education. A broad exposure to many different disciplines helps students avoid the pitfalls of specializing too early, which can lead to limited interests and narrow thinking.
What is the Chesterton Academy model? It begins with a classical, integrated curriculum. Students read Homer, Plato, Aristotle, Euclid, Virgil, Dante, Chaucer, Shakespeare, St. Francis of Assisi, St. Thomas Aquinas, St. Teresa of Avila, Dostoyevsky. . . and G.K. Chesterton. Chesterton students study the Old Testament, the New Testament, and the Catechism of the Catholic Church. History, literature, philosophy, and theology are braided together. The sciences and the humanities are also intimately connected, so that the logic of math is seen in philosophy, and God’s handiwork is seen in the sciences.
Faith and reason meet in every class.
Equal emphasis is given to the arts, so that every student learns to draw and paint, sing in the choir, act on the stage, give speeches, and engage in debate. Each year builds on the previous, so that by the end of senior year, we have articulate, clear-thinking, well-rounded, and, very importantly, joyful human beings.
An Affordable Education for All
Because we seek to transform our culture, one of the great principles of Chesterton Academy from the beginning has been a commitment to thrift. Our dream is a return to the days when a strong, non-public education was affordable for any working class family, large or small, living on a single income.
We are trying to bring that dream to life. Yet we are building the dream by educating far more students for the same number of dollars than any other classical school in the region—or perhaps the nation. Chesterton’s tuition is by a large margin the lowest of any independent high school in the Twin Cities, and less than half the cost of many.
At Chesterton we are doing more than building one school. We are creating a model that maximizes the value of donor dollars to bring an outstanding Christian education to the broadest possible audience, with the ultimate goal of eliminating cost as a barrier for any family. By the time we are educating hundreds of students at Chesterton, we hope thousands in the region and tens of thousands across the nation will be benefitting from the Chesterton model.
As we prepare for continued growth in the 2013-14 school year, we ask for your support. Your gift will help us to continue to provide a tremendous educational experience to those looking for something more than just one more high school option.
Donations primarily fund the difference between our operating costs and tuition revenue, as well as provide aid to students who need help with the tuition. Currently, over half of our students receive some level of tuition aid.
Chesterton Academy already is gaining attention across the country and throughout the Twin Cities, and with your help we can continue to make a difference in the lives of our students and their families, and across the broader culture.
Thank you in advance for your support!
