The Minnesota Project’s Fruits of the City program organizes volunteers to glean fruit from trees to be delivered to area food shelves.

Food shelves in Minnesota struggle to fulfill demand for produce year round; meanwhile many homeowners and orchards are burdened with more fruit than they can make use of. In its second year, The Minnesota Project’s Fruits of the City program seeks to solve both dilemmas by organizing volunteers to glean fruit from trees in Twin Cities neighborhoods and deliver it to area food shelves. In 2009, with the help of many volunteers and homeowners, Fruits of the City gathered and donated over 15,000 pounds of surplus fruit to Minnesota food shelves. We are aiming for 22,000 pounds this year. We are excited about the potential for growth, but we need financial support to make it happen.
