Awakenings is changing the face of Alzheimer’s and dementia – and that face has a smile on it.
Alzheimer’s and dementia are cruel diseases. If you’ve experienced them through a loved one, you know the frightening changes that come with them – not just memory loss, but erratic and sometimes violent behavior, aggression, anger, and frustration.
Ecumen has pioneered a new way of treating Alzheimer’s and dementia sufferers. Instead of relying on pharmaceutical therapy, which can include dangerous and even deadly anti-psychotic drugs, we have created individualized relationship therapies; a network of doctors, nurses, staff and family who work together to create a unique, individualized care plan for each patient. They get to the root causes of problems and treat them first to address these painstaking anxieties.
The results are astounding! Patients who haven’t talked or walked in months or sometimes years, are laughing, joking and taking steps. Once quiet hallways are filled with the lively conversation of people who have been awakened and are living their best lives.
The daughter of one Awakenings Project participant told her story and said that before Awakenings, she sometimes wondered if her mother might be better off dead.
“Now I hope she lives until she’s 200 years old. She’s just so happy,” she said.
