E-quip Africa refurbishes gently used computers, books and school supplies to donate to West African schools and students.

“Are you still collecting old computers for your Africa program?”

That’s the most asked question for E-quip Africa and the answer is YES and a whole lot more!

Right now we've got enough stuff, but are in need of financial support. We URGENTLY need your help in raising $12,000.00. Here’s the nitty-gritty on E-quip Africa’s current status:

#1. We have a warehouse over-filled with used clothing, school supplies, text books, library books and computers, plus hospital gurneys, walkers, crutches and A CAR! We planned to send one container, but because of the generosity of our material donors, we need to send two.

#2. Kandiyohi County decided to re-route County Road 9 through our rented warehouse on the southeast corner of Eagle Lake. We’re hoping construction won’t start until summer 2012, but you can never tell. That’s right… the road will pass right through the warehouse!

#3. This puts E-quip Africa at a pivotal point in its history. Considering these developments our goal is to send two (2) containers before construction starts so we can vacate the warehouse and start anew with a change in focus. The alternative is to send one container (really ¾ of a container when a car is included) and then pay the Kandiyohi County landfill to bury whatever is left. I don't know about you, but that alternative is not acceptable to me.

#4. EQA sends CRT computer monitors (the big old clunky kind) to Ghana and each one contains 5-15 pounds of lead. We have invited Greg Martin, a local recycler and refurbisher to travel to Ghana to foster recycling in the country thereby creating new economic opportunities and bettering environmental conditions. Greg will travel with Doug in January of 2012.

#5 EQA has been lucky enough to collect hundreds of elementary reading textbooks in excellent condition. Two retired teachers plan to travel with Doug in June of 2012 and work with Ghanaian teachers to incorporate these reading materials into their existing curriculum--they are Candy Anderson and Joan Kuhn. This is HUGE! Books of this nature are practically non-existent in Ghana. Students currently practice English by reading off the blackboard and repeating the words after the teacher. These books will extend the learning opportunities for hundreds of Ghanaian primary school students!

What's in it for you?

A. You'll will have the satisfaction of providing computer learning opportunities to many students who have never even touched a computer.

B. You will provide classroom quantities of beautiful reading texbooks for elementary and middle school students, something actually unknown in most Ghanaian schools.

C. You will effect new and valuable learning opportunities for educational staff and recycling business entrepreneurs by helping send three experts to the country to share their knowledge.

D. Your contribution is entirely tax deductable.

Please help us achieve these ambitious goals by donating generously here at Give.MN.org on November 16 or any time you think of us.

If you are able to consider a major grant, please contact Doug for more opportunities. Or perhaps you're considering travel to Ghana--Doug has the details.
