Giving to Diabetes of Democracy will help us find new ways to use ritual, storytelling, and humor to combat the epidemic of Type 2 Diabetes.
This project started because I and many people I love have been affected Type 2 Diabetes. It feels like everywhere I turn, as we have been working on the project this year, someone has been affected by the disease.
The Cooking Show con Karimi & Comrades is a way we use humor, storytelling and real LIVE cooking to get people to reconsider their relationship to their food and themselves. It's episodic, and the new episodes, entitled Diabetes of Democracy, will focus on the growing epidemic of Type 2 Diabetes in communities where it hits the hardest.
Last year, we tried to match a $10,000 seed investment from Creative Capital. We came up short, but we are continuing because the people we are meeting during the development stage: those with Type 2, those at-risk, and those with loved ones with the disease, fuel our passion.
Your funds will help us take the show to community centers, kitchens and other non-traditional spaces where we can take the show, so more people can have access to it.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention named Type 2 Diabetes as one of the leading causes of death in communities of color, and the rates of this disease are skyrocketing daily. Doctors and scientists have devised multiple strategies to prevent and even to reverse this disease, but the solutions are neither accessible nor palatable to the people who need them most.
Our new project The Cooking Show con Karimi y Comrades: Diabetes of Democracy will be a series of workshops and live performances to engage communities of color in conversations about Type 2 Diabetes – and how they can use their culture's cuisines, stories and rituals to combat this epidemic.
Please support the development of this necessary project! Our goal is to double Creative Capital’s investment by raising $10,000 by the end of 2010. If everyone gives just $10 we'll reach our goal. Or, if just 100 people give $100 each, we'll reach it faster!
We exist because of you, the people – and as we begin this journey, we couldn’t think of doing it without you. We have ideas to simmer and a disease to dice. Please make your gift today.
