DAKOTA WICOHAN
Renewing Dakota language and life ways with youth and families -
To Remember • To Reclaim • To Reconnect
We remember our stories, our history, our language. Current projects: Oral History Project which captures the language and history from our elders; Dakota Documents Digitization Project which supports digitizing and making available historic texts written in the language; Dakota 38 Wokiksuye Memorial Ride which memorializes and brings healing to our painful past.
We reclaim, recover, redeem and restore our language and life ways. Current programs: Dakota Language Teacher Apprenticeship which supports and develops Dakota language teachers; Dakota Itancan Kagapi – the making of Dakota leaders which supports youth development and emerging leadership development that leads with wo’Dakota.
We reconnect our tiwahe, tiospaye, oyate.
We support the renewal of kinship, i.e. the basis of Dakota values. It is threaded throughout our organization and work. Honor our relationships- share wowacinye (responsibility).
Dakota Wicohan (wee-Cho-hah), meaning the Dakota way of life, works at a grass-roots level with committed learners, families & youth to revitalize the language and life ways. Dakota ia! Speak Dakota. Teach Dakota. If you know one word, share Dakota.
Our philosophies: Learners as Teachers & Intergenerational Roles & Responsibilities.
