The Coolest Job in the World

Headed to Intermedia Arts last week for an evening event I was frazzled. After handing over my fussy four month old baby boy to my husband, I tried to comfort my three year old daughter as she cried and asked me why I had to go to work. "Where are you going mommy?" she cried. "I have to go to work tonight sweetheart." "Where do you work mommy?" "I work at this awesome place where dancers and painters and singers and actors and people who make movies all hang out and do what they love." "Why mommy?" "Because we need them. Everyday is special because of artists. Can you imagine a day without music? without color? without movies and cartoons? without dancing?" "Mommy, can I go to work with you?" "Not tonight honey but someday, you can work in the arts too" "YEAH! I want to work in the arts!"

As I drove to work that night I reflected on my first memory of my mom at work. She was on the board of a local non-profit arts center and was picking Mr. Rogers (yes THE Mr Rogers) up from the airport to take him to do a show for kids in my hometown. I was three years old at the time and my mom had the coolest job in the world.

I smiled. I am incredibly lucky. Working to support the arts and artists is soulful work and makes everyone's life more interesting and meaningful and fun.
