Healing Haiti (www.healinghaiti.org). 2/3 of the funds raised will be used to support job training and entrepreneurship in Haiti. We are trying to raise funds to support job creation via construction of a training center, microfinancing, and helping to start small businesses (sewing, manufacturing
We are also raising funds which will be applied to the construction/remodeling of a facility in Ukraine which will operate as a physical and occupational therapy center. We are working with a charity that has undertaken a feasibility study to build a medical center in Zaporozhe Ukraine. These funds would be used for the PT/OT portion of the facility as well as the purchased of a van and staffing for one year. The facility will provide much needed services to orphanages in the area where disabled children are left to rot. Two of our children were adopted from an orphanage in Zaporozhe and we have witnessed first hand how awful the conditions are. The sights and sounds have left a permanent mark on us and we want to help the children achieve their full potential so Ukrainians can see the value in these children and choose to keep them in their families.
One may naturally ask why Ukraine can’t take care of their own children. One reason is pure ignorance. They are where we were 60 years ago when children born with Down Syndrome were routinely sent to a mental institution. The other reason is economics and priorities. The per capital GDP in Ukraine is $7,400 while it is $50,000 in the U.S.
Below is a video Gretchen created for orphanages in Ukraine. The video shows how much children with Down Syndrome are loved and also shows them examples of some of the therapies that can help the children. The video was translated into Russian. At 16:10 of the video you can see Ricky performance in front of 6,000 people at the State Fair and at 17:00 you can see Ksenya, a girl we adopted from Ukraine in February.
