About Coffee House Press

Coffee House Press publishes exciting, vital, and enduring authors of our time. Since our founding in 1972, we’ve grown from a poetry magazine
and letterpress to one of the premier nonprofit literary publishers in the nation. In 2013 alone, Coffee House authors have been honored with the Anisfield-Wolf Book Award, Wheatley Book Award, Lenore Marshall Poetry Prize, Paterson Award for Sustained Literary Achievement, and Guggenheim fellowships. Our titles were also finalists for the PEN/Faulkner Award for Fiction and the National Book Award.

Coffee House is redefining itself. Over the last few years, we’ve undergone a steady transformation from a publisher of books to a curator of literary experiences. We realized that our value to our community is in the way we connect writers and readers. Through our Books in Action initiative, we’re encouraging literary arts beyond the page through interdisciplinary and reader collaborations such as Writers and Readers Library Residencies, Ring Ring Poetry, and Potluck Supper with Projects to Follow.

We come together first as readers, and reading is what generates new creative work, whether it be a poem, a new way of looking at the world, or an editorial career. At the end of the day, what animates our staff, our audience, and the writers we’re lucky enough to publish is a love for reading, and a belief in the transformative value of a text. The new Coffee House Press tagline is A Community of Readers. It puts the literary experience front and center and it tells everyone that no one here goes it alone: we’re all in this together.

2013 Give to the Max Match Fund

This year, we are thrilled to announce that, thanks to the generosity of our board of directors, we have $7,000 of matching funds for Give to the Max day! This is an exciting opportunity to double your gift in support of community engagement programming; royalty advances to authors; editing, designing, and printing our titles; and most importantly, distributing our books to readers everywhere.

We hope you will voice your support of innovative publishing and new voices in contemporary literature with a gift to Coffee House Press.

Thank you for your support!
