Mission

MISSION STATEMENT: We tend to the spiritual lives of the poor, inspiring hope.

City House, a non-profit organization with 501(c)(3) status, opened its metaphoric doors in 2000. Rather than a particular place, City House represents a group of experienced and educated professionals who have committed themselves to serving people who live on the margins of our society. These individuals have experience and training in theology, spiritual direction, communications, financial and administrative management, and the non-profit sector. City House promotes self-reliance and offers hope among disadvantaged persons in the Twin Cities. We do this by offering opportunities for spiritual companionship and exploration which encourages deepening one's spiritual life--not a particular religion or faith. City House works with established social service agencies to add a unique non-denominational, spiritual dimension to their services. We serve the people these agencies serve, offering them an added holistic dimension to their healing. City House does this in companionship with individuals struggling with issues related to homelessness, poverty, incarceration, reintegration into the community, and chemical dependency.

There is no one else providing ecumenical spiritual companionship opportunities in this way to disadvantaged groups in the Twin Cities. City House fulfills a unique role in our community, providing important services that make a life-changing difference to people struggling in the face of significant obstacles to their self-sufficiency. In total, City House operates in partnership with 14 agencies at 20 sites, around the Twin Cities.

Programs

City House offers its services through staff and volunteers professionally trained in the practice of Spiritual Direction. Volunteers interact with clients through one-on-one visits, group sessions and off-site retreats. City House volunteers provide a listening, healing presence to those who need it most. Working to open up new perspectives and insights, we help to point out the possibilities along the way and encourage those we serve to draw on their own spirituality for strength and hope. The souls we serve are or have been homeless, prison inmates, those dealing with chemical dependency, or victims of domestic abuse.
