Caring for patients with memory loss and cognitive disorders. Providing resources for family members and caregivers.
In 2010, Tom and Julie Allen visited physicians within the HealthPartners Center for Dementia and Alzheimer’s Care (CDAC), who diagnosed Julie with Alzheimer’s disease. She was 57 years old.
During the first five years of Julie Allen’s memory loss, the Allens asked a series of doctors whether Julie’s condition was Alzheimer’s but were told it was not likely, Tom said. “Dr. Haake and Dr. Barclay of CDAC diagnosed Julie accurately and they did it in a very straightforward and compassionate manner. They have been amazingly prompt in replying to our concerns and have connected us with outside resources whenever we needed them.”
Julie agreed. “I always have a sense from Dr. Haake and Dr. Barclay that, at my core, I will continue to be the person I have always been as this disease progresses.”
The idea of memory loss can be scary, especially as we get older. There are several conditions that cause memory loss and it can be difficult to determine whether the problem is related to age, depression, medications or a memory disorder such as Alzheimer’s disease or another form of dementia.
Whatever the situation, the HealthPartners Center for Dementia and Alzheimer’s Care offers the expertise to make living with memory loss more manageable for patients, families, and caregivers. Our clinic consists of an expert interdisciplinary team including neurologists, geriatric psychiatrists, neuropsychologists, advanced practice providers, and nurses specially trained in the management of memory disorders. We also provide patients with the unique opportunity to participate in clinical trials and ongoing studies through the groundbreaking research currently being conducted by the Alzheimer’s Research Center at Regions Hospital.
CDAC relies on charitable gifts to help pay for programs not covered by day-to-day revenue. Such programs allow us to expand our clinical work and provide additional services and resources to the community, including education, support groups and more.
