Give to BOOKS FOR HOME and allow a child who is homeless or highly mobile to escape into the world of books.
BOOKS FOR HOME is a literacy initiative that began in 2005 as a spin-off of the Stuff for School program. The program began by providing students in grades 1-3 with books they would first use in their classrooms and then get to take home (literacy studies show that most low-income homes do not contain books). Due to a generous donation from a publisher during the 2007-2008 school year we were able to distribute 26,000 books to a variety of groups involved in literacy projects throughout the Twin Cities. This year, as we did last, Books for Home will provide books to homeless and highly mobile students in the Minneapolis Public Schools through our Stuff for Kids program. The books are just one of the items these students receive in their backpack. It is our hope that we will be able to provide additional books to these students as they move through the course of their year and, we hope, advance their literacy skills.
