20% Theatre Company Twin Cities produces new and progressive plays that are written, directed, and designed by women and transgender artists
In the November 2009 issue of American Theatre Magazine, the largest theatre magazine in the country, playwright Marsha Norman's article "Not There Yet" - about the current status of women in theatre - begins with what is essentially the backbone of why 20% Theatre Company Twin Cities exists in the first place. "According to a report issued seven years ago by the New York State Council on the Arts, 83% of produced plays are written by men--a statistic that, by all indications, remains unchanged. Nobody doubts that the North Pole is melting, either--we see it on the news. These are both looming disassters produced by lazy behavior that nobody bothered to stop. End of discussion. What we have to do in both cases is commit to change before it is too late."
20% Theatre Company Twin Cities takes this issue a bit further, however, to also recognize GLBT artists, and specifically transgender artists, as severely misrepresented or under-represented in American theatre. We are dedicated to producing plays written by female or transgender playwrights, and employing GLBT and female allies in artistic positions behind-the-scenes as well.
By the end of December 2011, we will have produced 19 full-length professional plays, touched the lives of over 5000 patrons, and engaged and inspired nearly 500 theatre artists.
