2011-12 Annual Appeal

Wingspan came into my family’s life about ten years ago, and I want you to know what a remarkable and priceless gift it has been.

My sister Liz, who has Down Syndrome, was living in a group home in St. Louis when my parents began to experience symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease. I decided to move my mom and dad here, and of course, I wanted my sister to be close to me as well. So began the search for a new home for Liz.

My husband and I looked at many homes. At first, I found nothing that I would be willing to have Liz move into. Then I learned about Wingspan through Liz’s social worker. She told me about its excellent reputation and about an opening in one of their homes. I made a visit and was so impressed. Then Liz visited, and she loved it immediately! Jeannie, the house coordinator, even made a point of serving lasagna, my sister’s favorite meal, at that very first visit. Liz was thrilled — and so was I.

That was nearly a decade ago, and Liz has thrived, always happy and fulfilled. It’s been a joy to have her nearby. She is such a happy person who makes you smile by just being with her!

Recently, Liz began to show signs of Alzheimer’s herself. The staff is totally committed to her on this new journey and we know they will be with her every step of the way. I saw their commitment so clearly when she broke her hip two years ago and spent weeks in extended care for rehabilitation. Staff members came to visit on their own time, keeping Liz company and bringing her pop, movies to watch, and her favorite treat, M&Ms. Their care and concern is truly amazing.

My Mom and Dad have passed away, but I know that they are looking down on Liz and are smiling to see how happy she is and what a wonderful life she has. My family and I will always be indebted to Wingspan – and to donors like you.
