We serve communities engaged in the revitalization of Native American languages.

There is no such thing as an ugly language. Today I hear every language as if it were the only one, and when I hear of one that is dying, it overwhelms me as though it were the death of the earth.--Nobel Prize winning author Elias Canetti

The Birchbark House Fund strives to create change in community by supporting and promoting indigenous language revitalization in order to encourage creative fluency in Native American languages by production of original memoir, traditional stories, teachings, and other expressions of culture. We accomplish this work through:

  • Grants to writers and artists creating work slated for publication in Ojibwe (anishinaabemowin) and other indigenous languages
  • Scholar Support to students and educators seeking experiences at language camps, immersion programs and conferences where language revitalization is at the center of the conversation
  • Book Gifts of Ojibwe and other language publications, a vital necessity to language recovery in reservation and urban Native American communities and schools

A gift to The Birch Bark House Fund is a gift to The Minneapolis Foundation. Please be certain to direct your donations to the Birch Bark House Fund when donating via the Minneapolis Foundation. Thank you for your support.
